We, as human beings, are emotional and feeling creatures; each with an individual “soul contract” ~ depending upon what we chose or needed to learn during this lifetime. Although we all know we have emotions, some people exert enormous effort denying or suppressing feelings. When a client tells me that he or she is angry and I ask them, “How do you know?” ~ they look confused and say, “I just know!” … and go on to explain the particulars of their situation.
Actually, the reason that we “just know” is because we feel a “bad” or sick feeling some place in our body. And because that feeling is fairly uncomfortable, our brain kicks in and generally says, “Yuck, what is that!?!”
Hopefully, this “yuck feeling” will force us to identify the feeling and then label it ~ so that our mind will seek resolution. The trick is ~ to tell ourselves to find the meaning of this feeling, rather than take prescription (or other kinds) of drugs to suppress it.
Now how do we know when the problem is solved? Simple! The “bad” feeling is gone. Actually it’s not a “bad” feeling even though it feels yucky … it is an important signal that something in our life needs attention or healing or fixing. Thus, it’s a yuck feeling with great intentions!
It is analogous to recognizing how we know if we are hot or cold or comfortable. If we are hot, our body signals us by sweating or feeling sticky (yes, a genius body we have) and the word “hot” floats down to land in our mind. Our body got uncomfortable and our brain stuck the label “hot” on it. Yes, indeed, we are brilliant all around!
OK, now what? We’ve got the feeling and we intellectually know what’s going on ~ so, yes, now what? Guess what? Our experienced mind lets us know what to do about it. If we are cold, our body sends things like shivering or goose bumps signal; our brain says, “Aha, I recognize this ~ cold;” and our experienced mind lets us know how to fix the problem. Yet if we are comfortable, we never even think about it because our body has no reason to send us any signal at all. Everything is fine.
We know when we are angry or depressed or anxious or sad. We know because we get a particular feeling in a specific place in our body. And then, of course, our brain goes into its rational mode trying to reason out 1) its meaning and 2) what to do about it. Thus, our emotional, feeling self drives our rational, thinking self.
And if it’s true that our rationality – our ability to think for ourselves – makes us different from the rest of the animal kingdom, then we are in big trouble as a race!
And why is that? Fair question. If our feeling drives our thinking … oh, not the type of thinking that allows us to invent things or make improvements, but rather the type of thinking that influences our decision-making regarding people, relationships, situations, ourselves … isn’t it scary to think how many people are using drugs (prescription, legal and/or illegal) to mask or deny our feelings and emotions? In this country, as well as others, people may be legally forced to take medications for the sole purpose of deadening emotions.
Drug companies spends a huge amount of money, time, and effort researching psychiatric medications to purposefully mask emotions because it is easier to “squash” a feeling than it is to deal with it. People with deadened feelings are easier to control … especially when they forget their originating complaints. Also, there are many of us who think that life would be easier to live if only there were a pill that could take away pain, anger, anxiety, and more. Of course a drug can never take it away, but it can camouflage it until such time the feeling gets larger and larger and one needs an increased dosage of drugs to keep it hidden and larger and more until …
… okay, they are still breathing, but are they alive? Perhaps we better reconsider the importance of emotions to the survival of our human race.
If we take the time to thoroughly learn what our emotions feel like, we can develop understanding and appropriate coping skills which, in turn, can allow us to live our lives clearly, fully, and completely. What chance do we have if our feelings are numb? If we get a “yuck” feeling somewhere in our body and have no idea what it is signaling to us because we either suppress or medicate it, how can we take care of it so we can feel good again?
And so in learning to take care of yourself: Do you know what each of your feelings feel like? Can you describe them – temperature, size, movement-wise? Where do they live in your body? If you feel anxiety do you know that because you feel a fluttering or a sinking in your stomach or your chest or throat? Everyone’s feeling is uniquely different. How does your body send a sign that something in you needs attention? Can people taking emotion-suppressing medications or street drugs feel fulfilled? Attain spiritual growth? Fully and completely enjoy life?
How do I know existence depends upon emotion and feeling? Hmmm, consider this: a) we preach that being nicer, kinder, more understanding, loving thy neighbor (if you can’t love, then like ~ as some people are not nice) will make the world a better place. We do not say high tech will make the difference (though high tech makes life easier). And b) we do say to make ourselves a better people, we must nourish our souls. We do not say nourishing our wallet will make the difference (though money makes our lives easier). Thus, our feelings are our signals, our consciousness, our very survival tools.
